10 Fun Soccer Drills You Can Practice at Home
Keep Your Child Active and Improving Between Classes
Regular practice is key to soccer development, but it doesn't have to be boring! Here are 10 fun drills you can practice at home with your child.
Equipment You'll Need
Most of these drills require minimal equipment: a soccer ball, some cones (or household items), and a small space in your yard or driveway.
The 10 Drills
1. Ball Mastery Challenge
Set up a simple obstacle course with cones. Have your child dribble through while you time them. Make it a game by trying to beat their best time!
2. Wall Pass Practice
Find a wall and practice passing against it. Start close and gradually move back as accuracy improves.
3. Target Practice
Set up targets (empty boxes, hula hoops) and practice shooting accuracy. Award points for hitting different targets.
4. Follow the Leader
You dribble the ball and your child follows, copying your movements. Switch roles to keep it fun!
5. Ball Juggling
Start with one touch, then build up. Even young children can learn to juggle with practice.
6. Cone Weaving
Set up cones in a line and practice weaving through them. Time each run and try to improve.
7. Passing Relay
Set up two cones and practice passing back and forth. Count consecutive successful passes.
8. Shooting Gallery
Create a "goal" with cones and practice shooting from different angles and distances.
9. Ball Control Challenge
Practice stopping the ball with different parts of the foot. Call out body parts for variety.
10. Mini Scrimmage
Set up a small field and play 1v1 or 2v2 games. Keep it fun and focus on skill development.
Tips for Success
- Keep sessions short (15-20 minutes for young children)
- Always end on a positive note
- Make it a game, not a chore
- Praise effort, not just results
- Practice regularly, even if briefly
